My definition of loud is if I would be annoyed if someone was riding around my neighborhood on my bike when I was trying to enjoy a peaceful evening. I have found any modification to the stock muffler an another HD muffler causing a by pass of the baffle system to be not only too loud but to have an irritating raspy note. The modified HD muffler that I use now is a pleasing throaty sound and much louder then stock.
There was no difficulty installing the slash cut that I remember, I may have had to shim the head pipe some, nothing you can't work out. The original heat shield is engineered to fit with the stock muffler it won't fit the slash cut.
